Is Buying “Organic” Worth It?

In a recent article entitled “Rethinking Organics” in TIME magazine, CNN health guru, Dr. Sanjay Gupta made the following statement:
“Scientists have yet to document a definite, long-term negative affect” from pesticides.
One must wonder where Dr. Gupta gets his information, when even the very conservative
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60% of herbicides, 90% of fungicides and 30% of insecticides to be carcinogenic.
These poisons and the chemical fertilizers used in “conventional” farming and by many of us in our own yards, are also associated with a rise in many other health problems, such as neurological disorders (many of these chemicals are derived from nerve gases), immune system imbalances, hormone imbalances and miscarriage, to name a few!
Fetuses and young children are at the highest risk. Families who live in the mid-west and the agricultural valleys of California, where agribusiness reigns supreme, know all too well that runoff from fertilizers and other chemicals causes many babies to be born with “blue baby” syndrome and farm workers (as well as residents) to have many serious health problems.

Dr. Gupta also states that “the evidence for nutritional advantages of organic food is ‘thin.’” He goes on to say that vitamin and antioxidant levels for organic foods do not differ significantly from non-organic foods. Here are just a few examples that would suggest otherwise.
- The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has concluded that the use of artificial fertilizers has led to a significant drop not only in vitamins, but also in the mineral and protein content of foods.
- There has been an 80% drop in vitamins and minerals in apples and a 70% drop in potatoes since 1985
- A 90% drop in wheat protein since 1900!
- A 35% to 96% drop in the mineral content of a variety of vegetables from 1940 to 1991, according to a British Agriculture Ministry study
Other studies have also shown antioxidant levels of organic foods to be higher that conventionally grown foods.
Unfortunately, not only were Dr. Gupta’s remarks un-founded, but there was also much that he left unsaid in this debate.

Not only are organically grown products much higher in food value and much safer to eat due to the lack of toxic residues, but producing them also uses much less fossil fuel (oil and gas) and does not pollute our air, soil and water as chemical farming does. Even more important, organic foods are not genetically modified (GMO) or genetically engineered (GE).
However…
“
Buyer, Beware!” - It is very important to read the fine print on “organic” food products, as the USDA allows the word “organic” to be applied to products that are as little as 70% organic by weight. The other 30% of the product (especially of prepared foods and body products) usually contains the same harmful ingredients found in non-“organic” products.
It is even more important to scrutinize the ingredients in prepared food and body care products labeled “natural” (which are NOT organic or they would say so) which are often no healthier for you than products that are not labeled “natural.” To find out which body care products are healthier for you and your family go to
